The Gita Wisdom website, programs, and publications are inspired by the teachings of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977), founder-acharya (“teacher-by-example”) of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Prabhupada arrived in New York from India in 1965, instructed by his guru, Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati, to convey the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, the Srimad Bhagavatam, and other sacred texts. Prabhupada did not seek to convert people to Hinduism. He presented the science of Bhakti (devotional) yoga, to inspire an appreciation for the divinity of life in all its forms and an awareness of the world itself as a manifestation of divinity. The term Prabhupada, as used by his disciples, is an honorific title meaning “the master [prabhu] at whose feet [pada] others gather to learn”.
